You know you’re an e-commerce geek when you pay attention to checkout processes when buying online. Amazon recently made a change to their checkout process and one of the Accorin team members pointed it out. Guess us Accorinauts are e-commerce geeks.

Amazon spends millions each year optimizing and testing every aspect of their checkout process. After all, a more optimized checkout process = higher conversion rates = higher revenues, so their current design is clearly not random. It certainly went through thousands of test variations, and it includes a lot of great elements.

After looking at Amazon’s new checkout process, and Accorin’s best practice checkout process, we couldn’t help noticing a lot of similarities.

Amazon’s New Checkout Screens

*Want a bit of the backstory on the cart contents? Accorin went 100% VOIP and needed a way to connect a Polycom conference phone to our network. Ooma is the solution. Great product. Easy sign-up and a streamlined configuration process.

Accorin’s Best-Practice E-commerce Checkout Screens

Take a look at this Wireframe Template showing part of Accorin’s standard checkout process. We use it as a starting point on our e-commerce projects. Lots of similarities, huh?

Let’s Compare:

* Both have a one page checkout with incremental checkout steps.

* Steps are all editable on the same page.

* Both page layouts feature a main panel that’s ⅔ of the page width with a side panel, containing the order summary, that’s ⅓ of the page width.

* While Amazon combines the item review and shipping options in the same panel, Accorin permanently shows all the products in an order  in the right panel.

* Accorin has validation logos and badges on the checkout page to build consumers trust (clearly, Amazon has already earned that trust).

Overall, the similarities outweigh the differences.
